Ordering a custom cake for the first time can feel uncertain. You're not walking into a shop, pointing at a display, and saying "that one." You're describing something that doesn't exist yet and trusting someone to make it. This guide removes the uncertainty. It covers exactly what to include in your WhatsApp message, how far ahead to order, and what happens after you send it.

At Num Num's Bakery, every custom order goes through WhatsApp. There's no online form, no app, and no website checkout. It's a direct conversation with the team, which means we can confirm availability immediately, ask follow-up questions if needed, and get your order right.

Step 1: Decide on the Basics Before You Message

The more decided you are when you first message, the faster the process moves. You don't need to have every detail locked in, but having the following ready will get your confirmation much sooner.

What to have ready before you open WhatsApp:

  • Pick-up date (and whether Harris Park or Riverstone is easier for you)
  • Number of guests -- this determines the size
  • The occasion -- birthday, wedding, baby shower, naming ceremony, etc.
  • Flavour -- choose from our 15 options (listed on the order page if you need a reminder)
  • Whether you want any custom decoration

Step 2: Send the Message

State the occasion and date

"Hi, I'd like to order a birthday cake for pick-up on Saturday the 15th from Harris Park."

Give the size in guests, not centimetres

"We'll have around 20 people." We'll match the right tier size. You don't need to know that 20 guests means a 10" cake -- we'll work that out.

Name the flavour

"The flavour should be Mango." If you want two flavours on a layered or multi-tier cake, say so here. "Bottom tier Chocolate Truffle, top tier Vanilla Bean."

Describe the decoration or send a reference image

"Simple buttercream finish in blush pink, with 'Happy Birthday Priya' written on top." A photo is worth more than three paragraphs. If you have one, attach it in the same thread.

Mention any additional dietary needs

All our cakes are eggless. If any guests are nut-allergic, lactose intolerant, or have other requirements, mention it now so we can advise honestly on what's possible.

Step 3: Wait for Confirmation

After you message, the team will respond to confirm availability for your requested date and size. This usually happens within a few hours during business hours. During peak periods (Diwali, Christmas, school holidays), allow a little longer.

The confirmation message will include a price quote and, for larger orders, a deposit request. Once that's settled, your order is locked in. You'll be given an exact pick-up time closer to the date.

How Far in Advance Should You Order?

The honest answer depends on the complexity of your order.

  • Themed or character cake: 3 to 5 days
  • Multi-tier wedding or event cake: 3 to 7 days
  • Festival periods (Diwali, Eid, Christmas): 3 to 5 days

If you're reading this the day before you need a cake: message us anyway. Depending on our schedule, same-day or next-day may be possible for a simple order. We'll tell you honestly if it isn't.

Pick-Up: What to Expect on the Day

All Num Num's Bakery cakes are collection only -- there's no delivery service. Pick up from Harris Park (96/96 Wigram Street, daily 11 am to 10 pm) or Riverstone (Shop 8, Riverstone Shopping Centre, Monday to Friday 6 am to 8 pm, Saturday to Sunday 7 am to 7 pm).

You'll receive your confirmed pick-up time via WhatsApp. Cakes are prepared fresh to order, so pick up within the agreed window. If you're running late, message us -- we'll keep it safe.

For cakes with stacked tiers or tall decorations, consider the boot of your car. Keep the cake flat, not on a seat. Avoid placing it where it will tilt on corners. If you have a long drive, ask us for transport advice specific to your order.

What If You Need to Change or Cancel Your Order?

Message us on WhatsApp as early as possible. Changes to flavour or decoration are usually possible up to 24 to 48 hours before pick-up depending on complexity. Cancellations for simple orders can normally be accommodated. For larger orders where a deposit has been paid, the deposit may be non-refundable if cancellation happens within 48 hours.

We're a small team making cakes to order, not a factory with surplus stock. The sooner you tell us, the more options you have.
